How to Install a WordPress Theme

Published by Jennifer under WordPress Theme How To

Installing a WordPress theme can be quite easy once you have the right tools in place.  First, you need to have WordPress installed on your site.  Sometimes hosting sites make this easy by offering pushbutton WordPress installations.  For instance, if you have a cpanel with your hosting company, you will typically find a link to “Fantastico.”  Click on the Fantastico link, then click on WordPress and it will give you the instructions for installing it on your site.

To install a WP theme, you really need to have an FTP program.  My favorite FTP program and the one I’ll be demonstrating with there, is SmartFTP.

Log into your FTP with your site’s IP adress, username, and password, and then on the remote host side (your web host) click on the folder where WordPress is installed.  This should open your WordPress folder, then click on the “wp-content” folder, and then click on the “themes” folder.

ftp

On the local side (the files on your computer) of your FTP program, click on the folder containing your WordPress theme, and move the entire folder into the themes folder on the remote host side.  Note: some themes have nested folders, so you may have to open up one or two to get to the folder that needs to be moved over.  The folder that contains the files and the image directory (for most themes) is that one that needs to be moved.

Once the theme has been transferred, log in to your dashboard by going to [yourWordPresssite]/wp-admin.  Once logged in, click on Appearance > Themes to select a new theme.

And voila!  You should be set with your new look!

Featured Section Doesn’t Work Quite Right with WP 2.8

Published by Jennifer under Savvy Web Design

I was eager to download the latest WordPress update – 2.8 – only to realize that the featured section I’ve added to the recent templates no longer works in 2.8.

The section will show the same image for every featured post rather than showing post-specific images, and the featured section on single pages doesn not show up correctly.

To remove the featured section from the new templates, simply go into the sidebar.php file and remove the section.

I will let you know if & when I get a chance to update the themes.
